Here’s a simple way to avoid playing with fire

May this Medicare insurance blog post find you in great health with your Medicare Insurance working properly.

We’re having the wettest summer in forever, so we try to get outside whenever the weather permits.  Today, I want to discuss a simple way to avoid playing with fire.

Karl Bruns-Kyler of The Big 65 cooking schmores in Highlands Ranch, Colorado.

Now Plato loves Smores as much as the next doodle, but he did ask me to share a fiery question:

Is your Auto & Home insurance up to date?

Photo of Flo's car after accident in Colorado.

Flo was in an accident on Thursday.

Flo and Plato sitting together in Denver Colorado.

Thank goodness no one was injured, though four cars were damaged.

Peace of mind is knowing your Home & Auto coverage is up to date.

Quantz tending her flowers in Highlands Ranch, Colorado.

Consider:
• Updating your auto insurance card in the glove box.
• Downloading your Insurance Company’s app.
• Setting up the Accident Support number in your contacts.
• Keeping a first aid bag in the trunk.
• Scheduling a review and/or shopping with your P&C agent.

Here’s a Forbes article that may be helpful.

Aunt Nancy in the kitchen visiting the family in Highlands Ranch, Colorado.

We had a wonderful visit from Aunt Nancy who came to Denver for work and she joined us for dinner.

Sus came down from Fort Collins to be with the “fam” and we sure had a nice time.

Friends of The Big 65 gathering in Colorado.

Last year’s Father’s Day/Birthday/Xmas gift was a propane pizza oven. We’ve been getting better with our pies (and neighbor Sally makes amazing dough).

Everyone seems to love making their own pizzas. Santi gave it both thumbs up while visiting. He’s back home in Puebla, Mexico, preparing to complete his final internship before graduating University with a business degree.

Lifelong Met’s fan Mary Ann attended a Rockies game with her great nephew, and he was lucky enough to get a foul ball.

Mary Ann said she felt torn at the game, growing up a Mets fan but living in Denver forever since. I say having two teams to root for means you can’t lose, right?

I love this pic of M’Liss and Miss Paula enjoying the beach in South Carolina. These two are part of a friend’s group which began as a weekly driveway pandemic potluck and the routine stuck (at least that’s what Weitze, another neighbor, told me.)

Nice ladies in South Carolina The Big 65.

We all know that staying connected is good for the soul. Ladies, please keep up the good work! Wanna share how you stay connected?

Plato chatting with Perry and Ed in Denver Colorado.

Plato certainly helps us stay connected. He likes to stop and chat with Perry and her husband Ed when we see each other walking.

Bob Sue and Rudy in Colorado The Big 65.

Bob, Sue, and their doggy Rudy saw me biking home in the rain (sudden downpour) and they were kind enough to let me in to wait out the storm with a glass of wine and a fun catch up.

Glad to see Rudy is on the mend !

That’s it for this week; Happy Father’s Day and keep squeezing the juice out of life!

Summer road trips are the best!

May this Medicare blog find you in great health with your Medicare Insurance working properly.

Is there anything more delightful than the great American summer road trip?

Kids and Plato in the car ready for the Great American road trip in Colorado with The Big 65

I still remember climbing into the back of our old blue Buick Le Sabre with my brothers and starting the drive to Ohio to visit our cousins. Do remember how exciting that was to be on the road?

Vintage Buick LeSabre for The Big 65.

Unfortunately, on our very first stop at a roadside diner for breakfast, Dad wasn’t paying attention, and, backing out of the lot, a bus creamed those beautiful tail fins.

Nobody was hurt but it ended the road trip on day one ☹. Boy was Mom mad!

Since Florence and Santiago both grew up overseas, Quantz thought they would enjoy taking a road trip with us to visit The Great Sand Dunes National Park.

Back in the old days, hospital visits were not the leading cause of bankruptcy, but these days, you really must pay attention to medical bills, even when you are on Medicare.

Quantz and Plato visit Great Sand Dunes National Park with Karl Bruns-Kyler of The Big 65.

Believe it or not, medical bills are miscoded up to 30 percent of the time, so be sure NEVER to pay a hospital bill until it is properly processed by your insurance company.  Take it from your local Medicare insurance broker

The same goes for your adult children with their insurance, tell them to beware!

Quantz walking in Great Sand Dunes National Park visit The Big 65.

Like many industries, the US medical market suffers from a true lack of competition. Hospitals will often send out bills that are wildly overpriced.

Santi walking in the Great Sand Dunes National Park.

If someone you know is struggling with a medical claim, here are the steps they need to take:

  • After receiving the initial bill, call in and demand an “itemized bill.”
  • Tell them you would like to dispute the charges.
  • Visit the website Fair Consumer Health and make sure the charges are legitimate.

Plato and friends visiting the Great Sand Dunes National Park.

The Senior National Park Pass is still the greatest value I know – $80 for life (you just have to be careful not to misplace it ).

Of course, smarter people than us would have made reservations to camp six months earlier, but our trick is to always arrive super early in the morning before it gets hot and before the crowds show up.

Quantz Plato and Karl pose for a family portrait in Colorado for The Big 65 Medicare insurance company.

Since it’s finally summer, we shaved Plato and gave him a mohawk. I can’t decide if he looks more like Mr. T or Robert DeNiro in “Taxi Driver.” What do you think?

When you travel, you meet lots of interesting friends on the way!

But the best part of road trips for us is the spontaneity of never knowing where you’ll end up next.

Sometimes the food is so-so.

Sometimes it’s amazing.

Friends of The Big 65 celebrate with shrimp in Colorado.

Two of my heroes are Rich and his wife Susie who work every summer in different National Parks across the country.

This is Perry’s International Peace Memorial between Canada and the US.

Last summer they were in Maine. This summer Rich is working for Bass Island National Park on Lake Erie, doing park maintenance when he’s not out on a kayak catching walleye.

Susie is with her kids for now, helping out with their newest grandchild before she rejoins Rich at another National Park later in the summer.

I love their zest for life and their incredible flexibility.

But I also agree with Barb in Ohio…it’s nice to be home with your babies!

That’s it for this week; keep squeezing the juice out of life.
