After several weeks in Madagascar with our former exchange student Mitia, it’s great to be home in Colorado. The state is in the midst of a fire warning, so last night, Highlands Ranch put on an amazing drone display to start the weekend celebration of our nation’s 250th birthday.
Our country is not perfect. There’s been intense political fighting since 1776 and it continues today… but that doesn’t negate all that is right and working well.
So if you get depressed with the state of our divided nation, please keep your eyes on the bigger picture.
Americans give more charitable dollars than any other country, $592.5 billion in 2024.
āAmericans are not just generous with money. In theĀ World Giving Index, 76%Ā of Americans said they had helped a stranger in the previous month ā one of the highest rates in the world.ā
My buddy Charles is everything that’s right about our great nation: a husband and father, a Military veteran, a successful real estate agent, an active member of his church (and a former minister), and a very devoted grandfather.
The great habits that Charles has developed are the secret to living well into retirement: keeping busy and staying connected to others.
Being around other people matters more than we sometimes realize. The National Academies found that about one in four Americans age 65 and older are socially isolated.
Thatās concerning because isolation can affect our health in ways similar to high blood pressure, smoking, or obesity.
Even after 27 years together, Adrienne says her heart still skips a beat when Mr. Wonderful says her nameā¤ļø.
If the people you love are far away, using apps like Facetime and Whatsapp will melt the distance and connect you with the people you love.
Many of you know we sponsored a student from Madagascar, bringing Mitia to the US to study for one year. Bringing her home was challenging. She returned to one of the poorest countries on the planet.
But Mitia has sisters and family and those connections will keep her going (this was the first time her sisters had ever been in a hotel pool or an elevator.) Equally important, we will stay connected to Mitia as she continues to build her life.
Having a student from one of the poorest countries in the world reminded us to be grateful for what we have, to stay connected, and to always help others.
So as our nation marks this special birthday, give thanks, help others, stay connected and remember:
“There is no them, there is only us.”

Keep asking,Ā “What’s the next big thing?”
