Plato just got groomed (which includes a mohawk). He loves coming home after the buzz cut because Q always buys him an overpriced treat.
It’s hard to believe August is almost half over.
We harvested the backyard honey and I am pleased to report none of the local bears got into the hives (though they did try to break through our fence).
We owe many of you honey for kind reviews and referrals. Be patient, it will be coming.
Thanks to my neighbor Sally for lending me strobe lights to keep the bears away.
Despite the drought, our neighbor dropped off some of the bounty from his amazing garden: tomatoes, strawberries, cilantro, basil, onions, eggplants and zucchini.
We all know the importance of eating our fruits and vegetables, but having a friend like Joe makes it much easier to comply.
When the house gets so hot in the summer, I confess to being a bit of a sloth when it comes to eating well (Q took this picture during her zoo volunteering). It’s way too easy to reach for the chips, processed treats, and all of the sugary snacks we have around.
My favorite business author, James Clear, has a great quote I keep in my office:
“You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems.”
After our last exchange student left, Quantz and I removed most of the evil, delicious foods from our pantry and replaced them with whole grain snacks, nuts, and lots of fruit.
It’s way easier to eat healthy if the crazy delicious treats invented by the food scientists are NOT in your home. If the absurdly yummy things are not nearby, you don’t have to use will power.
And when you grocery shop to refill the larder, the best strategy is to commit to shopping the store’s perimeter. That’s where you’ll find produce, fish, meat, eggs and dairy.
I bet this muledeer says, “eat more chicken!”
Try not to shop hungry, bring a list, and only go into the aisles to buy specific preselected items. At checkout, ask this question: Could I make three healthy meals from what’s here? If not, put something back and add some real food.
As my dad said, everything in moderation, even moderation.
Whether or not you choose to eat real food, be sure to spend time with real people.
Last weekend, my little brother stopped by Tom’s place in the Low Country. They spent an afternoon catching up on the porch talking about fishing, drinking something cool, and laughing about life. Stay connected like that and you will be healthy!
Keep asking, “What’s the next big thing?”
If family or friends need help… referrals are the lifeblood of my business.
