AEP starts Oct 15 + what Ireland taught me 🍀

Top o’ the morning! ☘️  May this blog find you above water🌊, your Medicare insurance going full steam ahead, and you not having to rearrange the deck chairs on the Titanic 🚢🧊.

The Annual Election Period begins October 15th😱.  If you’d like us to review your coverage for 2027, please start by emailing Gray at Gray@TheBig65.com. He’ll get the process started.

Here’s a link to all the plans on the Medicare.gov website if you’d like to browse.

If your Medicare Advantage Plan is going away😤 😞 😢, go ahead and book a time on my calendar. We promise to make sure all clients get the help they need.

And yes, this is actually a deck chair from the Titanic Museum😂in Belfast.

A deck chair from the Titanic Museum.

Quantz and I had never been to Belftast or Dublin, but as my client Jan promised, the Irish are among the kindest, friendliest people you’ll ever meet and the countryside is beautiful… even before I had a Guinness🍺 ☘️ 🧝‍♂️ !

One of the most fascinating experiences we had in Belfast was a Black Cab tour, which gave us a local perspective on the Catholic–Protestant conflict and the continuing work of reconciliation since the Good Friday Agreement set Northern Ireland on a path toward peace and stability (although the hiccups continue).

The bombings, the murders, the discrimination, and the hatred… huge obstacles that a nation is slowly moving past.

Visiting a country that is healing after centuries of civil strife gives me a new found appreciation for life the United States.

Of course our nation faces many significant problems and internal conflicts, but we must continue to put things in perspective. We enjoy comforts our ancestors could only dream of. I’m sure the Bog people of Ireland would be envious.

This trip was a powerful reminder of how easy it is to take things for granted:  safety, food, stability.

Consumerism and evolution have conditioned us to want more. Once we have that shiny new thing, it quickly loses its magic, and then we worry about the next thing instead of staying in gratitude.

That thought struck a chord as I listened to the Blinkist summary, The Art of Spending Money, by Morgan Housel.

A street scene in Europe.

Of course, money provides comfort and security, but so much of what makes life rich comes from relationships, our sense of purpose, and our appreciation for what we already have.

One of our favorite moments of the entire trip was sitting with a glass of Guinness and listening to the local lads playing “old-timey” Irish music in a country that is on the mend. It was magic.

That’s what we love about travel. Travel opens our eyes to new places and helps us to see familiar things with fresh eyes and gratitude.

Having worked with thousands of clients living in and transitioning into retirement, I loved how this book asks us to revisit our relationship with money and retirement:

  • What do I want my money to make possible?  Time with people I love? A new experience? A little breathing room?
    x
  • What already makes my life rich? A walk, a shared meal, a good book, or someone who makes me laugh?
    x
  • What am I making time for? Curiosity, friendship, and purpose deserve a place on the calendar, too.
    x

You don’t have to go to Dublin or Belfast to find any of this. Sometimes a richer life begins with calling an old friend or trying something new, especially when times get hard.

Meet Marlene and her puppet Chris P. Chicken🐔😂. Marlene warmed my heart when she shared this morning:

Thank you for the birthday wishes. My story is a very common one for seniors. I’m a widow and don’t want to be alone. I volunteer for a senior citizens cafe in Ohio two days a week and go to music there once a week to be with friends.
x
I also have my puppet that entertains seniors with me. This keeps me busy. The more we can make seniors laugh and smile, the more it keeps me laughing and smiling.
x
If my story has made just one senior smile, Chris P. Chicken and I have received our reward. Volunteer! You will not only help someone else, but it will help you even more!
x
Well said, Marlene! Today, you are making thousands of people smile (and my wife Q will be sending you honey!)

No one ever said life would be easy. Walking through the darkness is the only way we can truly appreciate the light. As you walk your path, look for ways to help others and remember:

“There is no them, there is only us.”
