Well, the World Cup is over and none of my teams won😢. That’s the way it goes with sports and life, you have to stay flexible.
We’ve been hosting the son of our first French exchange student from many years ago and it’s been a blast having Justin in our home.
After showing him Colorado, we took him to Washington, DC to see the monuments of our great nation. I told his parents he seems to be growing😂!
After visiting our nation’s capital, we brought him to the Shenandoah Valley to visit my brother’s farm and to experience everything that is right about America.
You should have seen the fish that got away😀🐟!
Every time I return to the place I grew up, I am reminded of the kindness and decency of the people of rural Virginia. My brother’s fiancée just opened the Work Skills Training Center For Youth in Goshen, Virginia.
Nicole’s Work Skills Training Center for Youth helps young people with disabilities develop practical job, life, and social skills through hands-on training.
Its mission is to prepare students for meaningful employment, greater independence and active participation in their communities.
After a week of training, the Center hosted a free meal for the community (donations were accepted) and the kids got to practice their skills. It was amazing!
That inspiring afternoon was also a reminder that strong communities depend on looking out for one another—including knowing how to recognize the warning signs of a stroke.
A stroke can happen suddenly, and every minute matters. Remember B.E. F.A.S.T.
B — Balance: Sudden dizziness, loss of balance or difficulty walking
E — Eyes: Sudden blurred or double vision, or loss of vision
F — Face: One side of the face droops or feels numb. Ask the person to smile.
A — Arms: One arm becomes weak or numb. Ask the person to raise both arms.
S — Speech: Speech becomes slurred, confused or difficult to understand.
T — Time: Call 911 immediately if any of these symptoms appear.
We visited the Animal Safari in Natural Bridge (and I almost had a stroke when this llama stuck his head in the window.
Other warning signs may include sudden numbness or weakness—especially on one side of the body—sudden confusion or a sudden severe headache with no known cause.
Do not wait to see whether the symptoms improve. Even symptoms that disappear after a few minutes may indicate a transient ischemic attack, sometimes called a “mini-stroke,” and still require immediate medical attention.
(While feeding the animals, I did not pay careful attention and this elk nabbed all the animal kibble, what a rascal!)
When it comes to a stroke, acting quickly can save a life and reduce the risk of permanent disability.
So pay attention to people you love and be like my buddy Steve:
Stay healthy.
Take care of the people you love.
Stay busy.
Keep on keepin’ on.
Keep asking, “What’s the next big thing?”
